Three penalties?!

It’s hard to imagine missing a penalty. You have only you and the goal-keeper. There are no defenders or obstacles in your way. You choose your spot, put the ball on the penalty spot, you take a run up and then bang! You hit it as hard as you can - usually - and you should score. Easy. Right?

Well, that wasn’t the case for Martin Palermo whose nickname was Loco which translates into crazy from Spanish, just like this situation. Martin who is from Argentina didn’t just miss one penalty he missed a hattick of penalties. Yes, three penalties in one game. Martin Palermo was wearing the number 9 shirt for Argentina when he played for Argentina against Colombia in a group game in the Copa America on 4th July in 1999. The first penalty, which came from a handball, smashed against the cross-bar, the second, which also came from a handball, was ballooned / flew over the bar and the third… the keeper saved it.

Argentina went on to lose the match 3-0. They did qualify from the group in second place, but they got knocked out by Brazil 2-1 in the knock-out stages. Brazil would go on to win the competition for at that time a 7th time.

But what happened to Martin Palermo? In 2001 he signed for Villareal in La Liga. He spent the next 4 years in Spain not really doing too well. Moving from Villareal to Real Betis and then finally joining Alves in the second division. Shortly after joining Alves, Martin went back to Boca Junior in 2004 and found his scoring boots. He went on to be the all-time top scorer for Boca Junior scoring a total of 236 goals in 404 games and scoring 112 goals in his second spell at the club.
